Ashley and Allen's Wedding

Little Acorns Lead to Mighty Oaks
We were about to order dinner in a Chinese restaurant in Santa Clara. Ashley was studying at nearby Santa Clara University, and I had recently started taking graduate classes there. The restaurant was named “Wong’s” and did mostly takeout business, which was obvious from the décor, but we were on our first real date together and for lack of a better plan, we ended up there.

Ashley: “Do you like beef with oyster sauce?”
Allen: “Eh. It’s ok.” (Not knowing she happens to like beef with oyster sauce.)
Ashley: “So you don’t like beef with oyster sauce?”
Allen: “No it’s fine. It’s just not one of my favorites.” (Not knowing she ALWAYS orders beef with oyster sauce.)
Ashley: “Oh…”
Allen: “But you can order it if you want. I’ll eat it.”
Ashley: “Okay. I think I’ll choose the beef with oyster sauce.”
Allen: “Okay. How about the salt and pepper squid?” (Not knowing she doesn’t like squid.)
Ashley: “Oh we can.”
Allen: “So you like squid?” (Not knowing she thinks squid is too chewy.)
Ashley: “Yeah it’s fine.”
Allen: “Because if you prefer, we can get the salt and pepper shrimp or the salt and pepper fish.” (Not knowing that she WOULD prefer shrimp or fish rather than squid.)
Ashley: “Yeah, squid is good.”
Allen: “Okay, I’ll order the squid.”
After dinner, we were presented with the bill and two fortune cookies.

Ashley: “What does your fortune say?”
Allen: “Little acorns lead to mighty oaks. What does yours say?”
Ashley: “Little acorns lead to mighty oaks.”
Allen: “No that’s what mine says. What does yours say?” (Not knowing that IS what her fortune says.)
Ashley: “Little acorns lead to mighty oaks. Same as yours.”
Allen: “Let me see that. [looks at fortune] Huh. Weird.”
Fast forward eight and a half years. A lot has changed in that time, the Chinese restaurant has become a Thai restaurant, we have both moved out of the city, and occasionally out of the state. We’ve gotten jobs, we’ve lost jobs, we’ve switched jobs, one of us even switched careers, but a few things are still true.

#1: We still have those two fortune cookie fortunes.

#2: We still have each other.
